OAKLAWN TO END MEET WITH THIRD PURSE INCREASE

In appreciation for the horsemen who have supported Oaklawn all season, purses will be raised between $1,000 and $2,000 each race for the remaining 10 days of the 2015 meet. This increase, which starts with the Saturday, March 28 card, marks the third time that purses have been raised since the beginning of the meet Jan. 15.

Far Right continued preparations for the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) April 11 by working five furlongs after the renovation break Thursday morning at Oaklawn under Greta Kuntzweiler. Far Right, who worked in company with stablemate Peteizum, a 5-year-old starter-allowance gelding, was credited with 1:00.80 over a fast-rated surface. According to clockers, He covered his final quarter-mile in :24.40 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.80. Peteizum went 5 furlongs in 1:01.40.

TRASKWOOD WOMAN WINS RECORD JACKPOT

For one lucky woman from Traskwood, AR there really was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow St. Patrick’s Day. Linda B., 62, walked out of Oaklawn Tuesday $143,543.78 richer after hitting a record jackpot while playing a $.25 Wheel of Fortune machine. The jackpot, the largest in Oaklawn’s history, beat the previous high mark of $125,103.43 set in Feb. 2013 by a Little Rock, AR woman.

American Pharoah earned a preliminary Beyer Speed Figure of 100 for his 6 ¼-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile race, Baffert’s fifth in the last six years.
