Barn Notes April 7: Local Arkansas Derby Runners Prepare to Work

Two of Oaklawn’s leading candidates for the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) are scheduled to work this weekend, their final moves in preparation for the April 16 race. Trainer Donnie K. Von Hemel said Suddenbreakingnews should breeze in the next three days, while Whitmore will go an easy half-mile Saturday or Sunday, trainer Ron Moquett of Hot Springs said.

Cosmic Evolution became acquainted with her new jockey during an easy 3-furlong work Wednesday morning at Oaklawn in preparation for Saturday’s $400,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3), which opens the annual Racing Festival of the South. Xpress Thoroughbreds’ Discreetness worked 5 furlongs in 1:03.20 Sunday morning at Oaklawn, the first breeze for the multiple stakes winner since finishing seventh in the $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) March 19. The Rebel is the final major local prep for the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) April 16, which is Discreetness’ next scheduled start.

Multiple stakes winner Suddenbreakingnews worked a half-mile in :48.80 on a cloudy Friday morning at Oaklawn in preparation for the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) April 16. Under regular rider Luis Quinonez, the Mineshaft gelding breezed shortly after the break to renovate the racing surface. Clockers caught Suddenbreakingnews in splits of :12.40 and :25.40 before galloping out 5 furlongs in 1:00.80.
