At least four Oaklawn-raced horses, including Kentucky Derby fifth-place finisher Suddenbreakingnews, were under consideration Tuesday for the Preakness May 21 at Pimlico. In addition to Suddenbreakingnews, Cherry Wine, Collected and Dazzling Gem are candidates for the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Three Oaklawn Horses in Derby, Plus One Also Eligible

Four Oaklawn-raced horses, including Arkansas Derby winner Creator, were part of an over subscribed field entered Wednesday for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. If 20 horses start, purse for Saturday’s 1 ¼-mile race, the first leg of the Triple Crown, will be $2,391,600, second-largest in Kentucky Derby history. The purse for the 2005 running was $2,399,600.

ASMUSSEN, RACHEL ALEXANDRA AND ZENYATTA

Hot Springs, Ark. (Monday, April 25, 2016) – Seven-time leading trainer Steve Asmussen and the top race mares Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, who were both named Horse of the Year after winning stakes earlier in the season at Oaklawn in 2009 and 2010, respectively, will be inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame August 12 in Saratoga, NY. The three, along with jockey Ramon Dominquez, who won the 2011 Apple Blossom with that year’s Horse of the Year Havre de Grace, were all selected in the contemporary category.
