Three-time Oaklawn training champion Kenny Smith is poised to return to the Arkansas Derby trail with Gordy Florida, among 14 horses entered in Monday’s $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) at 1 1/16 miles. After winning his first two career starts late last year at Remington Park, Gordy Florida, in his 3-year-old debut, was beaten a neck in the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 18 at Oaklawn.

Trainer John Servis said Bird of Trey’s ensuing flight pattern will be determined by his performance in the $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) for 3-year-olds Monday at Oaklawn. A Pennsylvania-bred son of 2004 Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone, the colt is coming off a fourth-place finish in the $200,000 Jerome Stakes (G3) Jan. 2 at Aqueduct. Lightly raced Collected got his first feel of the Oaklawn surface Saturday morning, galloping after the renovation break for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert in advance of Monday’s $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3). The 5-2 program favorite for the Southwest, arrived early Friday afternoon in Hot Springs following a two-hour, 45-minute flight that originated in Southern California, said Jimmy Barnes, Baffert’s top assistant.
