The road to the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) and subsequent Triple Crown races begins Monday with the seventh running of the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes, which drew a field of 10. In its short history, the Smarty Jones, which carries 17 points towards eligibility for the Kentucky Derby, has produced multiple Grade 1 winner Flat Out, 2011 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Caleb’s Posse and the likely 2013 champion three-year-old Will Take Charge. Phil Sims and Jerry Namy’s Don’t Tell Sophia hopes to once again establish herself as one of Oaklawn’s leading older females when she goes for the repeat in Saturday’s $100,000 Pippin Stakes. The 6-year-old Congaree mare, who will face only five rivals, also won Oaklawn’s Bayakoa Stakes last year, was second in the Grade 3 Azeri Stakes and finished third in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap. STABLEMATE DROGUE BEATS CYBER SECRET IN FIFTH SEASON

Oaklawn President and owner Charles J. Cella earned the victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Fifth Season Stakes, but it wasn’t with the horse most people expected. Homebred Drogue pulled away in the stretch to win by nine-lengths over his stablemate, 2013 Oaklawn Handicap winner Cyber Secret, for his first career stakes win. It was also the first stakes win for trainer Mike Johnson, a former assistant to Peter Vestal. Read More

STREET STORY WINS OPENING DAY DIXIE BELLE

Whispering Oaks Farm’s Street Story got the 2014 live meet off to a fast start for 2013 leading jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. and leading trainer Steve Asmussen by winning the $100,000 Dixie Belle Stakes before a rain-drenched crowd of 15,031. The Street Cry (Ire) filly survived an objection in the race to earn her first stakes victory. Read More

Trainer Josie Carroll, the only woman to win the $1 million Queen’s Plate, Canada’s most prestigious race for 3-year-olds, has a string in Hot Springs for the first time and hopes that Oaklawn will be the path to victory in some of the premier races for 3-year-olds on both sides of the North American border.
