Barn Notes: Justify scheduled to make his stakes debut in Arkansas Derby

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has won 13 Kentucky Derby prep races at Oaklawn since 2010, but never with a horse making just his third career start. That could change with Justify scheduled to make his stakes debut in the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) April 14, a race the trainer won in 2012 with Bodemeister and again in 2015 with eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

Novogratz Racing Stables Inc.’s Amy’s Challenge is under consideration for the $500,000 Ashland Stakes (G1) April 7 at Keeneland and the $400,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3) April 13 at Oaklawn, trainer Mac Robertson said Thursday morning; David Cabrera, Oaklawn’s second-leading rider this year, said Thursday morning that he will ride at Prairie Meadows after the meet ends April 14.

OAKLAWN RACING CLUB TO LAUNCH MARCH 24

Oaklawn is giving race fans the chance to experience Thoroughbred ownership in a low-risk, low-cost fashion with the Oaklawn Racing Club. The Racing Club will offer up to 200 shares at $500 each in a horse that will be purchased privately and trained by multiple stakes-winning Oaklawn trainer and native Arkansan Ron Moquett. Moquett, who is well known for selecting top horses such as Whitmore and Petrov for moderate prices, will identify and purchase an unraced 2-year-old with the goal of starting several times as a juvenile before launching its 3-year-old season at Oaklawn next year. The 2019 season runs Jan. 11 – April 13.
