Gary Stevens working horses at Oaklawn

Stevens is named on 15 horses over the first three days of the meet; Friday’s opening race of the meeting is scheduled to feature Pray Hard, a 7-year-old Kafwain gelding trained by Southern California-based Doug O’Neill, who has a string at Oaklawn for the first time this year. He is one of several horses on the grounds that survived the devastating fires at San Luis Rey Training Center.

Farrell took her first spin over the Oaklawn surface Wednesday morning in preparation for her 4-year-old debut in Saturday’s $125,000 Pippin Stakes for older fillies and mares; Grade 1 winner Sporting Chance returned to the work tab Tuesday morning at Oaklawn, breezing 3 furlongs in :37 over a fast track for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who is targeting the $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) Feb. 19 and $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) March 17 for the colt’s 3-year-old debut.
