Oaklawn Stakes Winners Headline Bet On Sunshine Saturday at Churchill
Two stakes winners from the 2017 Oaklawn meeting, Uncontested and Storm Advisory, are entered in the $80,000 Bet On Sunshine Stakes Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Oaklawn-raced horses have fared well in the Bet On Sunshine since it was first run in 2006.
Junior College won Oaklawn’s Hot Springs Stakes and the Bet On Sunshine in 2007. Native Ruler was 2 for 2 at the 2008 Oaklawn meeting before winning the Bet On Sunshine later that year. Bagg O’Day broke his maiden in 2014 at Oaklawn for trainer Steve Hobby of Hot Springs before the gelding won the 2015 Bet On Sunshine in his final career start.
Oaklawn-raced Recount won last year’s Bet On Sunshine.
Uncontested was a record-setting winner of the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes for 3-year-olds Jan. 16 at Oaklawn. Storm Advisory won the $125,000 King Cotton Stakes for older sprinters Feb. 4 at Oaklawn.
Also entered in the Bet On Sunshine are Oaklawn-raced The Truth Or Else, Pinson and Warrior’s Club.
Probable post time for the 7-furlong Bet On Sunshine, which goes as race 5, is 1:55 p.m. (Central).
Uncontested … Again
In addition to the $80,000 Bet On Sunshine Stakes Saturday at Churchill Downs, Smarty Jones winner Uncontested is entered in the $200,000 Steel Valley Sprint Stakes for 3-year-olds Monday at Mahoning Valley.
Also entered in the 6-furlong Steel Valley Sprint is Petrov, runner-up in the Smarty Jones and $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) Feb. 20 at Oaklawn for co-owner/trainer Ron Moquett of Hot Springs.
Jose Ortiz, a candidate for an Eclipse Award as the country’s outstanding jockey of 2017, is scheduled to ride Petrov, who drew post 9. Uncontested is scheduled to break from post 10 under Channing Hill.
Probable post time for the Steel Valley Sprint, which goes as race 7, is 2:33 p.m. (Central).
Monday’s sixth race at Mahoning Valley, the $75,000 Mahoning Distaff Stakes for fillies and mares at 6 furlongs, drew a field of 12, including Oaklawn maiden special weights graduate Swing and Sway.
Probable post time for the Mahoning Distaff Stakes is 2:04 p.m. (Central).
Filly to Watch in 2018
Miz K, a gray daughter of two-time Oaklawn stakes winner and millionaire Tiz Miz Sue, figures to be a 3-year-old filly to watch at the 2018 Oaklawn meeting after breaking her maiden Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs for trainer Steve Hobby of Hot Springs.
By Tapit, North America’s leading sire the last three years, Miz K was a 2 ¼-length winner of her second career start, a 6 ½-furlong maiden special weights event.
Miz K had finished fifth in her Sept. 28 career debut at Churchill Downs and was scratched from an Oct. 29 race at Churchill Downs because of a minor illness. The Oct. 29 card was the popular “Stars of Tomorrow I” program (all 2-year-old races).
Hobby trains the Kentucky-bred Miz K for his longtime client, Cresran LLC (Carol Ricks), also the filly’s breeder. He and Cresran campaigned Tiz Miz Sue and her dam, Sue’s Good News (the former another homebred).
Tiz Miz Sue had an 8-10-4 record from 32 lifetime starts and earnings of $1,129,709. She won Oaklawn’s Azeri Stakes (G3) for older fillies and mares in 2012 and 2013 and the Ogden Phipps Handicap (G1) in her final career start in 2013 at Belmont Park.
Sue’s Good News won her first four career starts, including a maiden, allowance and stake (Instant Racing Breeders’ Cup for 3-year-old fillies) race at the 2003 Oaklawn meeting.
Miz K was ridden in her maiden victory by Joe Rocco Jr., the regular jockey of Tiz Miz Sue, and covered 6 ½ furlongs over a fast track in 1:18.02. Miz K paid $12.80 as the 5-1 fourth choice in the 10-horse field.
Cresran sold a full brother to Miz K for $2.5 million at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

La Fee Verte hails from the same connections as Absinthe Minded (owner/breeder Briland Farm and Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas). Absinthe Minded broke her maiden at the 2010 Oaklawn meeting before winning the track’s Bayakoa Stakes in 2011 and 2012 and Pippin Stakes in 2012. La Fee Verte is by 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow.
