Oaklawn-raced Collected and Finley’sluckycharm both won $100,000 stakes Saturday and are now both undefeated in three starts this year; Untrapped, who competed in both the Rebel and Arkansas Derby, finished third in the Ohio Derby Saturday in his first start since the Kentucky Derby.

Oaklawn-Raced Collected Wins Third Straight Race

Collected, unbeaten in three starts this year, earned a preliminary Beyer Speed Figure of 111 for his devastating victory in the $100,000 Precisionist Stakes (G3) Saturday at Santa Anita. He won the 1 1/16-mile race by 14 lengths under Martin Garcia, the colt’s third consecutive victory and fifth in his last six starts.

Packing top weight of 126 pounds, Collected, a 4-year-old son of City Zip, ran the distance over a fast track in 1:41.52 and paid $3.20 as the 3-5 favorite.

Among Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert’s embarrassment of riches in the older male handicap division that is led by the nation’s top horse Arrogate, Collected has lost only once – a 10th-place finish in the 2016 Preakness – since finishing fourth in the $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) last year at Oaklawn.

Collected, as the 5-2 favorite, was beaten 5 ¼ lengths by Suddenbreakingnews in the 1 1/16-mile Southwest. Southwest runner-up Whitmore has won three stakes this year, including the $125,000 Hot Springs March 11 at Oaklawn and the $400,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) April 15 at Oaklawn. American Dubai, third in the Southwest, won the $150,000 Sunland Park Handicap April 16 at Sunland Park.

Baffert also trains Mor Spirit, a powerful winner of the $250,000 Essex Handicap for older horses March 18 at Oaklawn. That horse has won his last three starts, including the $1.2 million Met Mile (G1) June 10 at Belmont Park.

Cupid, another older horse trained by Baffert, received a 108 Beyer for his victory in the $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes (G1) May 27 at Santa Anita.  He won the $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) for 3-year-olds last year at Oaklawn.

No Luck Necessary

Finley’sluckycharm, one of the country’s top female sprinters, was a front-running 2 ¼-length winner of the $100,000 Chicago Handicap (G3) Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Finley’sluckycharm began her 2016 campaign with an allowance/optional claiming victory at Oaklawn and has won 8 of 10 starts overall, including four stakes. Trained by Bret Calhoun, she is 3 for 3 this year (all stakes). She covered 7 furlongs over a fast track Saturday in 1:22.17 and paid $2.60 as the heavy favorite.

Ivy Bell, who broke her maiden at the 2016 Oaklawn meeting, ran second.

Finish Lines

Untrapped ran third in the $500,000 Ohio Derby (G3) Saturday at Thistledown. Untrapped, owned by Michael Langford of Jonesboro, competed in Oaklawn’s two biggest Triple Crown preps, finishing third in the $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) March 18 and sixth in the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) April 15. … My Sweet Stella became the seventh graduate of Oaklawn’s $200,000 Honeybee Stakes (G3) for 3-year-old fillies March 11 to record a post-race victory with an allowance/optional claiming score Saturday at Churchill Downs. Five 2017 Honeybee runners have subsequently won stakes races. The 1 1/16-mile race had 11 starters. … Nickname, second in the 2016 Honeybee, ran second in the $75,000 Southern Truce Stakes Sunday at Santa Anita … My Master Plan, who competed at Oaklawn the last two years, won the $50,000 Danny Shifflet Scholarship Stakes at Lone Star Saturday.
