Texas Chrome Looks to Add Saturday’s Super Derby to His Resume
Multiple stakes winner Texas Chrome, who made his 3-year-old debut at Oaklawn, is the 7-2 third choice in the program for the $400,000 Super Derby (G3) Saturday at Louisiana Downs.
Trained by Oaklawn regular J.R. Caldwell, Texas Chrome is scheduled to break from post 5 under C.J. McMahon and carry scale weight of 124 pounds. A three-time stakes winner at 2, he finished third in his 3-year-old debut, the $150,000 Bachelor Stakes April 15 at Oaklawn.
Texas Chrome subsequently finished second in the $250,000 Iowa Derby (G3) July 1 at Prairie Meadows and was a half-length winner of the $100,000 Prelude Stakes Aug 6 at Louisiana Downs, the final major local prep for the Super Derby.
Iowa Derby winner American Freedom returned to run second in the $1 million Haskell Invitational (G1) July 31 at Monmouth Park and $1.25 million Travers Stakes (G1) Aug. 27 at Saratoga.
Texas Chrome is owned by Danny Keene, who won six races this year at Oaklawn. Caldwell saddled four winners at the 2016 Oaklawn meeting.
Also entered in the 1 1/8-mile Super Derby are Whateverybodywants, 7-5 program favorite Mo Tom, Mending Fences, Classy Bird, Dalmore and Fort Pulaski.
Probable post time for the Super Derby is 4:55 p.m. (Central).
Temperence Hill won the inaugural running of the Super Derby in 1980 en route to champion 3-year-old male honors. Temperence Hill broke his maiden that year at Oaklawn before winning the track’s Rebel Handicap and Arkansas Derby.
Oaklawn stakes winner Mallard’s Bro is among 12 horses entered in the $75,000 Unbridled Stakes Saturday at Louisiana Downs.
The 1 1/16-mile turf race is part of the Super Derby undercard.
Trained by Al Cates of Hot Springs, Mallard’s Bro won the $75,000 Arkansas Breeders’ Stakes in 2014 at Oaklawn.
Also entered in the Unbridled is Allied Air Raid, who broke his maiden last year at Oaklawn for high-percentage trainer Brad Cox, who was fourth in the Oaklawn standings in 2016.
Probable post time for the Unbridled is 4:21 p.m. (Central).
Jon Court, Oaklawn’s leading rider in 2000, has 3,993 career victories, according to Equibase, racing’s official data gathering organization.
