Hot Springs, Ark. (Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016) –
Champion Racing Stable’s Haveyougoneaway, benefitting from the garden spot behind the two early leaders, inched away in the final stride to win Saturday’s $100,000 American Beauty Stakes by a neck over 6-5 favorite Sarah Sis. As is tradition, Miss Arkansas Loren McDaniel presented the trophy to the winning connections.
From the start, the top two betting choices and expected front runners, Sarah Sis and Super Saks, went head to head through opening fractions of :22 and :45 3/5 for the first half mile. The favorite disposed of Super Saks entering the stretch, but soon had to battle with Haveyougoneaway, who came up the rail to overtake her rival late. The winner completed the six furlong race in 1:10 1/5 over a fast track.
“The race set up perfect for us,” said winning jockey Jareth Loveberry. “The two speed horses went to the front as I expected and I was able to set off them. The rail opened up for us down the lane and I had plenty of horse to get her going. I was worried the #2 Sarah Sis was digging in and was going to get to us, but we were able to stay in front and get up for the win. She’s an honest filly that tries hard wherever she goes. She loves it here and showed it today.”
Meshell finished third and was followed by Super Saks, Swing It Dish, Donita’s Ruler and Spring Included.
Haveyougoneaway, a 5-year-old Congrats mare trained by Allen Milligan who had finished third in the same race last year, improved her record to 7-2-6 in 20 starts and has now earned $312,425. She returned $9, $3.40 and $3 at odds of 7-2.
Live racing resumes Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. first post.
