HOT SPRINGS, AR (Friday, Jan 10, 2014) – Whispering Oaks Farm’s Street Story got the 2014 live meet off to a fast start for 2013 leading jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. and leading trainer Steve Asmussen by winning the $100,000 Dixie Belle Stakes before a rain-drenched crowd of 15,031. The Street Cry (Ire) filly survived an objection in the race to earn her first stakes victory.
Street Story raced in the second flight of the nine-horse field while Zip On led through an opening half-mile in :46 2/5. The winner began to make her move entering the turn, gained control at the top of the stretch and drew off to win by one length over Questlie. Racing Holiday finished third. The winning time was 1:14 1/5 for six furlongs over a sloppy track. More Than Beauty, the 2-1 favorite finished eighth.
“There was a lot of speed in the race; I thought Ricardo did a really good job with her today,” Asmussen said. “We were really fortunate with the draw. He took advantage of where she was at and she ran really well.”
Street Story, bred in Kentucky by John Oxley, improved her record to 4-2-1-0 and has now earned $98,350. She returned $7.20, $4.60 and $3.20 at odds of 5-2.
In addition to Street Story, the other star of the day was jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr., who was a perfect four-for-four in his first day of riding at Oaklawn. Three of his winners came for trainer Cody Autrey and owner Steve Landers.
Live racing at Oaklawn continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. first post. The feature is the $100,000 Fifth Season Stakes and fans in attendance will be treated to $.50 corned beef sandwiches and $.10 sodas.
