James Rogers’ affiliation with horses goes back decades. In the early 1980s, he owned and trained Quarter Horses before transitioning to Thoroughbreds and eventually getting out of the business.
In 2003, Rogers, who works primarily in the oil business, and his wife, JoBrenda, decided to dabble into ownership again. But, little did they know that less than 10 years later a $55,000 two-year-old purchase would lead to their biggest success as owners. Alsvid, trained by Chris Hartman, became a millionaire in 2015 and earned two graded stakes victories.
After finishing second in the 2014 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) and five other Oaklawn sprint stakes, Alsvid finally earned a victory in the 2015 Count Fleet. He followed that up with a victory in the Aristides Stakes (G3) at Churchill and took his connections to their first Breeders’ Cup as a participant in the Sprint.
Alsvid earned two more stakes victories in 2016. He repeated his win in the Aristides and won the Kelly’s Landing Stakes. He also finished third in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar.
Black Hawk Stable finished second in the owners standings in 2015.
