To the many who will gather at Louisville, Kentucky, this weekend the happenings in Hot Springs, Arkansas, might never occur. But to the die-hard Oaklawn followers who will pass through the turnstiles at this track on Friday and Saturday, the results of a few key races will linger and go a long way to sustaining a tradition which many in Arkansas hold near and dear. They Got It Right

An announcement came this week which would change the Kentucky Derby forever. The booming and dramatic presentation of the racecall of the Kentucky Derby would come no more from the talented announcer Tom Durkin. Shortly after Durkin handed in his resignation NBC released that they had lined up Larry Colmus to take Durkin's place in the announcer's booth. They got it right again. Colmus is the most logical guy to follow Durkin into that spot and I am really happy for Larry. Read More

Playing Simulcasting, Oaklawn Style

April 23, 2011

Yesterday I spoke of playing simulcasting by focusing on Oaklawn-raced horses. I zeroed in on two -- George Ray at Keeneland (who scratched) and Labeled at Hawthorne. The latter, after the race came off the turf and was reduced to a short field by two scratches, was no value whatsoever and finished third. Ironically there was one other race at Keeneland which involved four runners who had raced at Oaklawn. That was the best play of the day. Read More
