Trainer Tim Ice
Born: 06/06/1974, East Liverpool, Ohio
Resides: Bossier City, Louisiana
Family: Heather, wife
Tim is training a stable at Oaklawn for the first time. He has worked previous Spa meetings, but as an assistant.
“I was an assistant to Morris Nicks for two years, Cole Norman for three and Keith Desormeaux for five. I wanted to have a thorough knowledge of the job and sufficient backing before venturing out on my own,” he said.
The Ice stable is currently headed by Summer Bird, a prospect for the $1,000,000 Arkansas Derby on April 11, and by Catmantoo, who competes in the $500,000 Oaklawn Handicap, April 4.
His major owners are K.K. and Vilasini Jayaraman, a husband and wife team, who are former residents of Hot Springs.
“I really enjoy working with horses, especially young horses,” mentioned Ice. “Dr. and Mrs. Jayaraman currently are readying 26 two-year-olds and some of them will come to me,” noted Ice.
The trainer is excited to have an Arkansas Derby prospect in Summer Bird.
“That colt has a lot of ability, will run long and is still learning. The nice thing about Summer Bird is that he can run his last quarter in :24 and change. Old time racing men have claimed for years that a three-year-old who can finish up like that, is a derby horse,” avowed Ice.
