Jockey Ken Shino

Jockey Ken Shino has become a regular at Oaklawn.In 2007, he took part in 82 races here, won seven, added 12 seconds and seven thirds.

Racing fans at Fonner Park in Grand Island, Nebraska were treated to a rare riding feat in 2000 when Shino rode eight winners on a 10-race program.

“I won the first race and then finished off the board in the second,” Shino remembers. “Then I won seven in a row and finished second in the tenth race. My horse was in front, but got beat nearing the wire.”

Three times Shino won the Fonner riding title. Several other meetings there he finished runner-up to Perry Compton.In 2004 at Prairie Meadows, he scored career victory 2000.

Shino, who won his first career race in 1987, says Don and Kelly Von Hemel really helped him get started riding.Another he credits is Tim Gleason.

“Tim has a place near Dodge City, Kansas. As a youngster, I worked for him two years there, getting on horses,” he said.

Shino rode Sand Ridge to triumph in the $142,000 Iowa Sprint Handicap at Prairie Meadows, July 4, 2003.
