Oaklawn fans have continued to show enthusiastic support for Instant Racing and have welcomed further expansion of the system over the past year.

Instant Racing® is the system introduced at Oaklawn as part of a field test in conjunction with Southland Greyhound Park in January, 2000.  It gave fans their first opportunity to play a pari-mutuel electronic game based entirely on horse racing.  The original tests were conducted by RaceTech, Inc., a company that worked for over three years on research and development of Instant Racing® products.  Starting with 50 terminals in 2000, the system has expanded to over 300 games in 2006.

RaceTech is a private group of enthusiastic racing industry representatives led by Oaklawn Park and AmTote, the country's leading totalizator company, which processes, dates and calculates pari-mutuel wagers for racetracks throughout the world.  Initially both tracks (Southland and Oaklawn) opened with special sections in their buildings with 50 Instant Racing terminals each.

The system has expanded to nine games, with more scheduled for introductions in 2005.  The games now part of the system include: Thoroughbred Mania; Across The Board; Yukon Willie's Gold Rush; Wild West Willie's Lucky Draw; Cash Carnival; Treasure Quest; Cruisin' For Cash; Instant Double; Triple Instant Double; Double Horseshoes; and  Triple Double Horseshoes.  The games in the system include nickel, quarter, dollar and five-dollar machines.

"We really started gaining some traction with the system late in 2001," noted Oaklawn general manager and RaceTech president Eric Jackson.  "Once the fourth generation (Yukon Willie's Gold Rush) moved into play, we saw business really pick up.  Where Instant Racing® handled $8 million in 2001, the system pushed $70 million by the end of 2004."

"In addition it has quickly become one of the most important factors in Oaklawn's ability to offer and support the largest purse structure of live racing in the track's history," Jackson continued.  "We have also developed an important revenue stream for the state of Arkansas, amounting to well over $1 million since the system was first introduced."

"We see each game as a pari-mutuel wager," he noted.  "And we're developing an interesting menu.  In this fashion we build our knowledge of what the public wants, through all the feedback we get.  We've also built the Instant Racing® Winners Circle and developed new games and promotions for that group on a regular basis.  We have tournaments and contests that are enormously popular.  We have already enrolled over 13,000 members and should reach 14,000 before the opening of the 2007 live meet.  Those members provide the majority of the play in the system."

Oaklawn Instant Racing® occupies a luxurious room at the south end of the first floor of the grandstand.
